SAAS-STAS Award for Excellence in Science Teaching 2018
(Outstanding Science Teacher Award - OSTA)

This Award recognises teachers who are role models in the teaching and learning of Science. Principals may nominate outstanding teachers for this Award. The Outstanding Science Teacher Award (OSTA) is sponsored by the Singapore Association for the Advancement of Science (SAAS) and Science Teachers Association of Singapore (STAS).

Nominations for the OSTA 2018 are open from 26 January to 2 April 2018.
The nomination electronic form must be completed on the google form here

Closing date: 2 April 2018.
We regret that incomplete or late submissions will not be accepted.


The objectives of the OSTA are to:

 focus public attention on the positive aspects of Science education, thereby raising
the public image of the teaching profession;
 recognise and promote excellence in teaching practice;
 honour dedicated, creative and effective teachers;
 encourage best and next practice of Science in schools; and
 accord Singapore students and teachers the opportunity to show appreciation for
outstanding teachers publicly.

We are looking for
Nominees for the awards should be teachers who:
 ignite a love for Science in their students;
 use innovative methods to engage students in learning of Science; and
 are passionate about making Science interesting and relevant to students.

We invite you to fill in the nomination form together with a brief description of why you think
this teacher deserves the Award.

There are two categories of awards:

1. Primary Science Teachers
2. Secondary/Junior College/ Centralised Institute Science Teachers

Award

 Award winners will each receive $4000 for professional development*, a trophy and a
certificate.
 *The winner is required to submit a report on how the Award has benefitted him or her.
He or she will also be required to present their practices at platforms such as
conferences and subject chapters as decided by STAS.
 The school which the Award winner is teaching in will receive $1000 to be used for
Science related programmes for students and a trophy.

Eligibility Criteria

Nominees must:
 have at least 3 years of teaching experience;
 be in-service teachers who are currently teaching in Primary and Secondary schools,
Junior Colleges or Centralised Institutes.
Instructions on Nomination
The following documents are to be submitted:
 Completed nomination form;
 Supporting electronic documents listed in Section D of the nomination form;
 Other supporting electronic documents (if any) e.g. videos, photographs, resources, parents’
testimonials; and
 Nominations must be made through the school principal.
Shortlisted teachers may be subjected to:
 An Interview and
 A Classroom Observation
All documents should be shared as URL to your own Google Drive to be place on the google form link indicated. 

Announcement of Winners


Winners will be notified in Term 3 and the awards will be presented at the Primary and
Lower Secondary Science Fair. The judging panel’s decision is final and no correspondence
will be entertained.
Code of Conduct
The Outstanding Science Teacher Award winners are to adhere to the following Code of

Conduct.

The award winner will:
 engage media and public inquiries with respect to the Award in a fair, polite and non-
partisan manner; and
 conduct himself / herself in a professional manner in accordance with the ethos and
Code of Conduct for Singapore educators. Failure to do so will be seen as undermining
the credibility and integrity of the OSTA, or to detract from the original conditions upon
which the Award was given.
The award winner shall not:
 exploit his / her status as award winner for commercial gain;
 use the OSTA title without the explicit permission of SAAS and STAS;
 endorse or market products for commercial purposes; and
 abuse his / her status to advance or promote political views.  
The award winner must not have been convicted of a criminal offence or given verbal or
written warning by his or her Reporting Officers.

The above standards are fundamental to being selected as an award winner. If the award
winner fails to abide by these standards, SAAS and STAS reserve the right to:
 remove the award winner’s name / centre affiliation from its website and from any other
publication it may use to promote outstanding professionals in Singapore, and / or
 revoke the OSTA. This will immediately apply in cases where a teacher has been
dismissed for reasons of professional misconduct or a criminal offence.
